Drill-Free Dental Fillings—Yes, dental lasers can be used to prep teeth for dental fillings! Using a special type of laser, areas of tooth decay can be removed and the adjacent tooth structure shaped for a filling. These small, minimally-invasive fillings rarely require any numbing medication, either. The key is to visit RB Dental Excellence regularly so that we can intercept cavities when they are as small as possible. The smaller the cavity is, the more likely you are to qualify for a laser drill-free filling.
Gum Recontouring/Reshaping—Do you have uneven gum tissues or a “gummy” smile? Gum reshaping is simple with a laser, as our Rancho Bernardo dentists can easily adjust the gumlines in a matter of minutes. Best of all, the results are immediately visible, unlike more aggressive surgeries that require lengthy healing times. Gingival recontouring can serve both cosmetic reasons as well as therapeutic ones, as in the case of crown prep treatment or managing gum disease.
Tongue Tie and Lip Tie Correction—“Frenectomies” involve loosening the tight strip of skin under the tongue (in the floor of the mouth) or behind the lip. Tongue and lip ties can make it difficult for babies to feed or children to develop proper speech patterns. Traditionally, these areas of skin had to be cut with a scalpel, which made it extremely uncomfortable. But with a laser, we can gently reduce the thickness of the tissue without any cutting. Children and parents alike appreciate the same-day benefits of laser therapy in this case!
Biopsies or Tissue Removal—Any time there are irregular tissues that need to be removed or biopsied, we can use a laser to minimize discomfort. Instead of surgical techniques that involve cutting into tissues, the laser gently cauterizes the tissues immediately around the piece being removed. This improves comfort and reduces swelling and bleeding.
Teeth Whitening— Modified types of lasers are used to speed up stain removal during our in-house teeth whitening treatments. This type of whitening uses the laser to oxidize stain particles inside of teeth, instantly leaving whiter and brighter tooth enamel behind. The process only takes about 1-1.5 hours from start to finish.
Gum Disease Treatments—Some dentists will also use special soft tissue lasers for pocket decontamination where there is active gum disease. Between this approach and crown lengthening, patients with a history of periodontal needs can better manage their oral health (and prevent relapse) between their regularly scheduled dental cleanings.
