Sedation Dentistry: Can You Really Relax in the Dentist’s Chair?

Sedation Dentistry: Can You Really Relax in the Dentist’s Chair?

Did you know that nearly 1 in 3 people experience some form of dental anxiety or phobia? When fear of the dentist—or even moderate nervousness—comes into play, it often gets in the way of accessing the oral health services you need. As a result, your teeth often go overlooked and dental conditions evolve into more serious concerns.

Thankfully, sedation dentistry in Rancho Bernardo can help, and we offer it right here at RB Dental Excellence.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

When you visit our dentist in Rancho Bernardo, we adjust your care environment to meet any unique physical or emotional concerns. For instance, if you have extremely sensitive teeth or had bad experiences in the past, we may want to incorporate lighter sedation medication into your routine visit. Or if you need treatment completed but want to feel like you’re “sleeping through it,” deeper sedatives can be used.

Sedation dentistry is a method of care where we increase your level of relaxation and comfort during your pre-planned procedure. It can be a light sedation where you’re still fully aware of your surroundings or deep enough that it almost feels like you’re napping through the appointment.

How Safe is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is extremely safe for all ages. Since there are several types of sedation medications we can use, we can select the one that’s best for the individual. Dr. Lozano is licensed to perform and oversee sedation procedures in our San Diego office, preventing the need to bring in additional doctors or schedule procedures at a medical facility.

In addition to is sedation credentials, each of our staff have training in sedation management and life support to ensure the highest level of patient safety at all times. We only perform specific types of dental sedation and clear each patient’s medical history before offering this service. We can also speak to your medical provider or any specialists if additional health clearances are required.

Who Can Have Sedation at the Dentist’s Office?

Most healthy individuals, whether they’re adults or children, can have dental sedation. Some people need sedation because they feel too nervous to schedule their appointments otherwise. Others require it because they require multiple or extensive procedures that are easier to complete in one longer sitting.

When you’re able to “tune things out” and catch up on your oral health needs, it’s easier to maintain a healthier smile in the future. Sedation dentistry makes dental wellness possible for people who find appointments challenging, don’t want to know what’s going on, or even who have a sensitive gag reflex.

Our Rancho Bernardo sedation dentist may recommend sedation for circumstances like:

  • Smile makeovers
  • Individuals with special needs
  • Sensitive gag reflexes
  • Mild to severe anxiety
  • Full mouth reconstruction
  • Multiple dental implant placement
  • Oral surgery/wisdom tooth removal

What Types of Sedation are Used in Dentistry?

There are different levels of sedation that we offer in our practice. One of the most common is nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas.” This light sedative can be used during any procedure, whether it’s a cleaning or a root canal. It makes you feel as if you’ve had a couple of glasses of wine, but it’s quickly reversible, so you can drive home afterward. If you just want to take the edge off, nitrous oxide sedation is a perfect choice.

Oral sedation and IV sedation are both two types of deeper sedatives that Dr. Lozano may suggest. Oral sedation is taken by mouth and keeps you in a semi-conscious state, although you likely won’t remember anything about the appointment. Whereas IV sedation is delivered through a small intravenous line and makes you feel as if you’re sleeping the entire time. Both of these deeper sedatives do cause drowsiness for several hours, so you will need someone to come with you to your appointment.
