At RB Dental Excellence in San Diego, we understand that dental procedures can be anxiety-inducing for some people. Especially those in pain, with past bad experiences, or a sensitive gag reflex. That’s why we offer three different types of sedation dentistry for a comfortable and stress-free dental experience in Rancho Bernardo.
If you have a low pain tolerance, extremely sensitive teeth, or require lengthy or complex dental procedures, Dr. Lozano may recommend adding sedation at your next appointment.
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry for Rancho Bernardo Patients
One of the primary benefits of sedation dentistry is the ability to undergo dental procedures with minimal anxiety or discomfort. Sedation dentistry uses various techniques to help patients feel relaxed, calm, and comfortable during their dental procedures to help them complete the care they need.
Sedation dentistry can also help those with a low pain tolerance or sensitive gag reflex. The sedatives used during sedation dentistry procedures can help minimize discomfort, and some patients may even experience temporary amnesia of their dental experience.
Sedation Dentistry vs. Traditional Dentistry: Which is Right for You in Rancho Bernardo?
Sedation dentistry is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and our team at RB Dental Excellence understands that different levels of sedation (or no sedation at all) are best for certain individuals. Some patients may prefer traditional dentistry and are comfortable with local anesthesia alone.
If you are unsure whether sedation dentistry is right for you, Dr. Lozano and our team can discuss your options with you and help you make an informed decision based on your individual needs.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication to help you feel relaxed and calm. The medication is typically taken by mouth about an hour before the procedure, and patients remain conscious and able to communicate with Dr. Lozano during their appointment. However, most people remember little to nothing about their visit.
This form of sedation is an excellent option for those with dental anxiety or phobia of the dentist’s office. Since it can take several hours to wear off, it’s important to bring a trusted friend or family member with you to the appointment (they will need to drive you home afterward.)
“Laughing Gas” Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide is commonly known as “laughing gas.” It’s an extremely light form of sedation that is inhaled through a soft, small mask over your nose. The gas is fast-acting and helps you feel calm and relaxed throughout the duration of your procedure.
One of the advantages of nitrous oxide sedation is that it has a very short recovery time. Patients are typically able to drive themselves home following the procedure because of how quickly it wears off. It’s also safe for all ages and can be used during nearly any dental procedure.
IV sedation involves the use of sedative medication delivered intravenously through a small IV line in your arm. The medication is precise and works quickly. Our patients remain semi-conscious during the procedure but are often unable to recall it afterward because of the amnesic effects of the medication.
This form of sedation is recommended for lengthy or complex dental procedures or for those with severe dental anxiety.
Why Consider Sedation Dentistry in Rancho Bernardo
If you feel nervous about getting dental care or sitting through a particular procedure, our Rancho Bernardo dentist is a great resource. Dr. Lozano is passionate about keeping patients comfortable and safe. As a licensed sedation dentist, we may recommend using dental sedation to help you “catch up on” dental care or to streamline the experience so that you feel relaxed at all times.
Many of our patients find that requesting sedation is the best way to access dramatic smile makeovers and dental implants or overcome a phobia of the dentist’s office. In fact, they may not ever need it again!
